The Apple M1 chip was first announced on November 10, 2020, during Apple’s “One More Thing” event. It initially appeared in three devices that were released in late 2020:
- MacBook Air (November 17, 2020)
- 13-inch MacBook Pro (November 17, 2020)
- Mac mini (November 17, 2020)
The M1 was Apple’s first custom silicon chip for Mac computers, marking their transition away from Intel processors. It was built on a 5-nanometer process and integrated the CPU, GPU, Neural Engine, I/O, and other components into a single system-on-a-chip (SoC) design.
The M1 later appeared in the 24-inch iMac (April 2021) and iPad Pro (May 2021), marking it as Apple’s first chip to be used across both the Mac and iPad product lines.
