The impact of Windows Nano Server

Windows 10 might be getting all the attention, but Microsoft’s new Nano Server could start a quiet revolution in server rooms across the globe. And not just in the server rooms.

Windows client OS today suffers. It is desperately shackled into the legacy.

As many of my readers might know, I was speculating (for last several years or so) about the future of Windows architecture.  And I was wondering why is not every Windows OS an Hypervisor. Such an obvious and elegant solution. For many deep-rooted problems,

Microsoft Architects knew all of this, even without my blog of course. And voila!  Here it is. The first implementation of this architecture. Developed in a typical unapologetically efficient manner of Microsoft 2015. No legacy, no desktop … no even MSI! The result is stunning. Olympiad of speculations on Windows future has already started in its full bloom.

I could not summarize it better than Jonathan in his article bellow:

… perhaps more interestingly, and certainly from a longer-term perspective, Windows Nano Server represents the future of Windows: a future where there is clean break from the necessities to support past applications and legacy code, a future where Windows can work remotely in a very lightweight, scalable, supportable way.

I might only add this (the core of my ideas you already know):

  • On this OS anything can run (legacy included) in its own VM.
  • There is no reason not to use this architecture as a client OS.
